Selection - Essays on the Bible, Vol. 1

from The Sermon on the Mount I: The Beatitudes
Page: 1/3

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

To convert these words of Jesus Christ into the realization of peace, we must communicate the practice of praying for world peace to a larger portion of humanity. When each of us constantly prays for world peace, we are emitting light throughout the earth. If we inspire an awareness of true peace in just one person, we have already exhibited our true nature as children of God. People who continuously pray for the peace of all humanity are precious, noble beings who are manifesting their true, light-filled inner being at all times.
Even with a great politician in power, unless each individual citizen also strives for peace, the nation will succumb to its own tenacious desire for self-preservation. For the sake of a short-term ‘peace’ in the interest of their own nation, the people will block the path to a perfect, large-scale, lasting peace. They may even wage war, claiming that it is ‘war for the sake of peace,’ when in truth it is a war to protect the interests of their own country.
It is stated in the Bible that one cannot preserve one’s life without giving it up. By this, I think Jesus meant that to attain the life of a true child of God, people must wholly relinquish their self-centered way of living. To put it in plain language, we must stop viewing everything from the perspective of gain and loss. Otherwise, we will never come in touch with our true identity as divine children.
It is easier for individuals to follow this path than it is for a nation to do so. The discordant vibrations held within the subconscious of one individual may be small, but a nation, which is an assembly of many, many individuals, holds an enormous volume of such vibrations, and they cannot be eliminated with only a small amount of light. Thus, when individual citizens become swept up in the turbulent movement of those vibrations, they end up getting involved in a war they do not want.
In order to disengage oneself from these discordant vibrations and let them vanish into nothingness, I advocate a path of shifting one’s thoughts away from worldly concerns of gain and loss. I urge people to pray a world peace prayer, through which their past karma can be purified, and they can reveal their true nature as children of God.
